Back in action!

Make way, this orange is on a roll. I just wrote the MCAT last weekend, so I can relax until I get my results. I pretty much spent the last 2 1/2 months preparing for it so there's been a lot of Etsy catchup for me to do!

I'll just leave some shop news for you to skim:
  • I retook and tweaked some of the pictures. I guess my photo standards are higher now =) Swing by and have a look!
  • Brawler Lucas from Mother/Earthbound is now available as a button!
  • 2 new sets available for sale!

Happy June!

Well, June's halfway through, but there's not much I can do about that! Just wanted to say a few things:

  • I just listed some cute little Canada flag pins. Personally, I'm bad at traveling, but everyone else I know seems to enjoy it so this is more for them than me.
  • Lastly, Sabrieth, who's been a great supporter of my shop, now needs a little help with emergency vet bills for her cat. She's got a lot of interesting stuff for sale on Etsy that would really appeal to your inner geek, especially the ladies. Check it out and help her out by treating yourself to something from her shop! It's a win-win situation!

Win Free Magnets!!

Just a quick update during my study break! The Mom's Basement blog is holding a giveaway for my History of Gameboys magnet set. It is super easy to enter! All you do is head to the Giveawayz section, leave a comment with your favourite shop item of mine, and you'll be entered in a random draw. The deadline's June 8th, so get your comments in quick!!

The design's nice and simple so it'd make for a great gift for any gamer you know, really! They make for a subtle addition on your fridge if you're still a closet gamer and don't want your friends finding out how many hours you've secretly logged on your Pokemon save file ;)

Hello, May!

Hi everyone! Times are busy, as usual! I had a lot on my plate, and there's only more to come. Unfortunately, few are shop-related things. Fun things of note:
  • It was my birthday last weekend! My friends paid for my dinners on Saturday and Sunday and I got to see them again now that they're out of school, which is always nice =)
  • During the first week of May, I took a 2-day first aid and CPR course, so now I'm certified for 3 years. I've always been a little worried about what I'd do if I was involved in an emergency situation, but I feel a lot more prepared for it now.
  • I was a volunteer assistant coach for my high school's ultimate frisbee team and we just finished off the season this week. I think I might have learned more than the students did! I've never coached anything before so I was really nervous, but the team was so enthusiastic and respectful and made it a lot easier.
  • I made another Etsy treasury about black cats. Adorable~
Nowadays, I'm preparing to write the MCAT in August. The MCAT is an admissions test for medical schools. I'm not planning to go to medical school, but veterinary school. Not all vet schools look at your MCAT score, but my top choice does. I'm taking an intensive learning course with a company whose name will not be mentioned - but if my course materials come any later, names will be dropped...

Thanks to MCAT courses, I don't have much time to study. But if I do have time, I'm watching Sket Dance or Kuragehime. I've been keeping up with both the mangas, and just want to see how the anime adaptation is.

Sket Dance is more of a gag manga. Newly introduced characters have recurring appearances and the gags persist throughout the story, making it hard to jump in without missing "inside jokes". So whether you read the manga or watch the anime, start from the very beginning!

I've been really impressed with the Kuragehime anime so far. The art style and characters are pretty true to the manga. This is probably the first anime-adaptation of a manga I've seen that actually brings the characters to life. This is more josei than shoujo, so it's targeted towards the slightly older female demographic. There's an unusual love story tucked away, but it's not the main focus. Check it out!

Help Terry the 3-Legged Cat!

The local cat rescue I volunteer for, Forgotten Ones, recently took in Terry who was surrendered by a family. As if his circumstances were bad enough, he also had to undergo extensive treatment at the vet's. The family surrendered Terry to a vet, who noticed something odd about his leg and had an x-ray done (see below). When asked, the family claimed Terry had been struck by a car 3 months ago and never saw a vet afterwards. Thanks to that, Terry's leg was amputated because it didn't heal properly. As if that wasn't enough, the vet also realized Terry had an auto-immune disease where his immune system attacks his own red blood cells and had to undergo blood transfusions at the emergency clinic just yesterday.

The family surrendered Terry to a vet who immediately noticed something wrong with Terry's hind leg. This is his x-ray, showing 4 fractures in his thigh that have healed into a crooked mess. His leg had to be amputated.

Long story short, the rescue now has a pretty hefty vet bill (that isn't poor Terry's fault) and needs some help. Find out how you can donate below.

To find out how to help out this handsome little guy, head to Forgotten One's Facebook page.

Proceeds from the Cat Rescue Donations section of my shop already go to Forgotten Ones. But if you'd like to donate directly to them, follow the link under Terry's picture above. I adopted my own cat from them and now volunteer with them, so I can state with 100% confidence that your donation will be in good hands. They're a non-profit, no-kill rescue group. And when I say non-profit, I mean all members are volunteers.

I hope you guys can help out a really good cause =)

Happy April!

I noticed that I didn't keep to my new "blog every weekend" rule. Oops! Well, now I have half an hour before I leave for my ultimate game and felt way too guilty not to post anything.

First off, spring has arrived! The weather's starting to warm up which means...final exams. I bet some of you thought I was going to talk about ultimate frisbee. I'm excited for ultimate, but finals comes first, after all.

Man, it's rough being a student. This week is my last week of classes and then I start finals with a bang - 3 exams in the first week. My last 2 exams are spaced a week apart though! Interestingly, when I get really stressed during exams, I feel really creative... If you see any new items listed in my shop this month, then I've been a bad girl.

Speaking of my shop, I've extended Red Cross donations through to the end of April as well. However, my Gameboy magnets and DDR magnets are no longer a charity listing. There's still so many other items you can donate for though! Head over to my Japan aid section and take a look! (I'll put up pics later - I have to pack my cleats and stuff!)

Now collecting donations for Japan!

I put some of my items in a special section of my shop, where 100% of the proceeds will be donated to the Canadian Red Cross Society for aid in Japan and other areas devastated by the earthquake and tsunami. You'll still have to pay for shipping, but it's great value! If you've already made a donation this month (even for another cause), show me your receipt and I will issue you a free shipping coupon, you awesome person!

There are also others doing the same thing! Click on the pictures below to go to their shop and donate!

*Please be wary when you make your donation - especially through a third party! While I can definitely guarantee that donations made through my charity listings are going to their respective causes, I can't say the same for others. Make sure you are donating to a trustworthy person or group. If you don't feel 100% sure giving your donation to a certain party, then don't do it.

Although not stated in the listing (since I last checked), 100% of the proceeds for any of the cute sushi earrings in Juliefoo's shop will go to the Red Cross for relief efforts in Japan. Again, you'll still have to pay for shipping but it's so worth it!

Instantt is a fellow Torontonian cat lover. Better yet, she's made all of her beautiful prints available for a donation of $15.00! Definitely a win-win situation for you!

Kanzashisteampunk just listed a choker out of her Octo-Couture line. 100% of proceeds goes to the American Red Cross Society.

Buy this leather flower hair clip from Parkers and Quinn, and they will donate 50% of the sale price to GlobalGiving. Choose from 5 different colours!
Graphics for those fundraising to use! A donation of $3.00 will let you use this design. Proceeds are said to be going to the Red Cross.

Your purchase of any pretty card in the Disaster Relief section of WhimsyArt1's shop will be donated to the American Red Cross Society.

Parkers and Quinn also made a treasury of items where profits go towards relief in Japan. Check it out!
Whimsyart1 just made a treasury for donations as well!

More donation options will be added as I find them! If you've donated already, you should be really proud of yourself. Every penny counts.

Aghalkjasdf, I have a 500 word report due tomorrow in less than 12 hours, and I haven't even finished my rough draft yet. I tried so hard to just sit down and work on it this week, but obviously that didn't happen. Note to self: work on school-related self-motivation. It's not too challenging, and frankly it's kind of boring, which is probably why I'm not interested. I'm pretty sure I was way more motivated when I wrote my Shakespeare essays in high school.

I stayed up until 2:30am Friday night because I decided to draw. I've been focusing on pushing myself past my artistic comfort zone, so I chose a more interesting but challenging pose. It took me about 2 hours to finish the sketch and I really had to wrap my head around some unfamiliar concepts like perspective and butts. Still, I'm pretty happy with the results - or at least until I notice everything that's wrong.
It's a baseball player!
I think I'll colour him after I finish with this stupid report. I'd much rather submit him than my report, but I'm pretty sure I'll get a 0% for him. Daaaaarn =(

My thoughts go out to Japan

So I woke up this morning to the radio as usual and heard about the earthquake and tsunami in Japan. Japan's a country that's more prepared for it than others, but still, the amount of damage is pretty severe. My thoughts go out to everyone who's been affected by this quake.

Haircut + my Etsy purchase!

So I got a haircut today! I had long hair for the longest time and decided to go short last summer. I got it trimmed as short as it was in the summer again! I asked for bangs and I kind of regret it because it does not look so good. The hairdresser did a great job, it's just that me + this haircut + bangs didn't end up as such a good combo. Once it grows out it'll look fine. I'll just suck it up.

More importantly, I ordered a bead sprite from Geek Mythology Crafts and it finally arrived today!!

Dadada daaa! Here he is!
Link is by far my favourite video game character and it's nice (and not so creepy) to have an original sprite of him put up on my wall instead of say, tons of my drawings taped everywhere. He shipped over in great quality, no loose beads or snapped parts anywhere. I was also worried that he got lost in the mail because it was over 2 weeks since Link shipped, but the weather was pretty bad in our general area when I put in the order, so that could explain it. I sent Geek Mythology a message about it and they prepared a whole back-up plan in case it didn't arrive. Luckily it did, but it just goes to show how awesome they are for caring about their customers =)

What sets Geek Mythology Crafts above all the other bead spriters is the fact that all of their sprites are 100% designed by them - you won't find them in any game. You should head over and see all the other amazing sprites they offer. I'm pretty sure I'll be back once I have some more spending money!

A custom Pitt sprite! He's amazingly detailed. I'm tempted to buy him next.
Left 4 Dead Sprites! Really cool. I'm surprised it hasn't sold yet!
A cute little Ramona Flowers keychain featuring their sprite design for her.

Back to school already?!?!

I had a week break from school but now I'm back in class and like all students, I have mixed feelings. Marks for all the midterms I wrote 2 weeks ago are posted and it turns out I have to go talk to the prof about one of my results. That course is important for applying to veterinary school and I don't feel like that mark really represents my understanding of the material, so I'm going to see if I can do anything about that.

On another kinda school-related note - since I'm a zoology student, I thought I'd make an Etsy Treasury about molecules, cells, and organisms too small to see with the naked eye.

My favourite item in the treasury is the water bear (tardigrade) plushie. Tardigrades lumber around moss on their 8 chubby legs in a really adorable fashion (hence the name 'water bear'). D'awww. Tardigrades are also amazingly resilient little bastards. When their environment gets really bad (no water, no air, they've even gone to space), they draw their legs in and become a tun. As a tun, they stay in a state of cryptobiosis, which means all their bodily functions stop. But they're not dead because once there's water around, they'll go back to living their little tardigrade lives. I took a course on invertebrates in the fall and learned all about water bears and all the other invertebrates listed in weirdbuglady's shop. I even emailed the prof and she loves it too =). Go on and check it out!

I'm nervous! I also drew a picture.

So Toronto's biggest anime convention, Anime North, happens May 27 - 29th. I've managed to register for an artist's table every year since 2008. The reason why I say "managed" is because there are only 100 tables available but way more than that who apply. Anime North staff just released details about the table registration process this year and even though it's not open, I'm so nervous already. The tables are pretty much filled within one minute of opening registration. I've managed to collect a lot of donations for Forgotten Ones Cat Rescue each year through Anime North, so it'd be really disappointing if I didn't get a table.

But for now there's nothing I can really do except prepare the application so I can send it in the second table registration opens!

I also thought I should draw more now that I have more time, since I've usually been complaining about not having the time. I'm still sort of dealing with artist's block so I came up with a way to generate a general idea of a person. I assigned numbers 1-6 for different physical traits, personality, and outfit and rolled 6-sided dice to generate a character (I have a dice rolling application for my computer). This is what today's results were:

Yay, I've been featured on The Artistic Geek!

There's nothing better than wrapping up a hectic crunch week (5 midterm exams in 4 days) by finding out that your fellow team mate has featured you on their blog! The two of us are on Team Gamers on Etsy.

You can read Etsy user Sabrieth's post at her blog, TheArtistGeek! She's planning to feature other geeky, cute, and nifty crafts from other Etsy artists, so you should check back often!

Sabrieth herself has some really cool (and shiiiiny) items up for sale. Her focus is on recycled jewelry and accessories. My favourite of her items is by far her snakeskin rings. They're made with real snakeskin sheddings generously donated by her long-time snake pal Shalar (who was not harmed in any way). Don't worry, it's sealed under glass and gives off a really cool effect. Check them out and the rest of her shop!

Yay promoting!

So I hit 10 sales today! Instead of a typing up a reflection, I will link you to an ultimate frisbee Etsy treasury I made last night =). It's a nice little collection of things that would make an ultimate player smile.

I didn't include my own ultimate frisbee pins but if you're curious, they're here.

Anyhoo, I'm still trying to promote. I'm also getting some cute animal designs in order. They're currently just pen sketches on my class notes, but I will make them all pretty later!

Happy New Year!

My resolution for 2011 is to work on promoting my shop. My advertising efforts need some work! I'll have to be better about managing my time, so it's a win-win situation for me.

For starters, I did a minor shop makeover! I edited my listings again and sorted them into new sections. As for promoting, I'm hoping to put more photos up on Facebook and DeviantArt. I'm also aiming to promote on forums and discussion boards. Time to design some banners!

As promised, I have some new designs available for sale (but not yet). I still need to set up a photoshoot and then I'll put up some pictures here. I did do some Perler bead art this break. Check out these Black-Eyed Peas coasters I have for sale!
